Long-imprisoned underground bishop dies |

Retired Bishop John Yang Shudao of Fuzhou who spent at least 30 years in prison life because of his faith has died at the age of 91.
The late bishop who headed the underground Catholic community in Fuzhou suffered a stroke and became unconscious several days before his death on Aug. 28. He died at St. Teresa’s Church in his hometown in Liangjiang county shortly after being discharged from hospital.
His funeral, to be presided by underground Bishop Peter Lin Jiashan, is scheduled for Sept. 1 at the same church which has a capacity of 3,000. Bishop Lin was a former coadjutor bishop of Fuzhou diocese but now apostolic prefect of Jianou, according to a Church source close to the Holy See.

FATHER Andrew Recepcion, a priest from the Archdiocese of Caceres, has been elected president of the International Association of Catholic Missiologists during the organization’s fourth conference and assembly last month.
Recepcion, the mission director of the archdiocese, is one among 80 participants from around the world who attended the activity.

The sessions of the Missionary Training Course begun August 2 ended on August 27 with a Mass presided by two bishops of Guinea Bissau. According to information sent to Fides from the Curia of Bissau. The course was attended by 20 missionaries, religious and lay people, from 13 different nationalities, who had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the local language and were introduced into the social-cultural context of Guinea Bissau. |

Semarang archdiocese in western Indonesia has launched a new leadership training program for minor seminarians.
Sixteen students from the St. Peter Canisius Minor Seminary in Magelang district in Central Java joined the Aug. 8-10 course organized by the archdiocesan Commission for Youth.
Participants analyzed and reflected on current issues and also learned public speaking and teamwork through various games.
